    The best
I’m 60 years old and have many interests. Music being at the forefront. This is the only music podcast I listen to. I know a lot about the music they talk about, but always learn something new. Highly recommended!

    Best music podcast?
My only criticism is that they don’t upload enough, but when the quality is so high I can’t complain. I don’t even know who these guys are but they dig deep and they have great taste. The Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman episode brought me here but I also recommend the Underrated Solo Albums, Alice Cooper and Kiss episodes (I hate Kiss and I still loved it.)

    Chrissy Hynde & Pretenders
Wow! Eye opening. Very enjoyable. Your passion and understanding of her and her music makes it a great show. I stopped at each of your top favs to listen to each on Youtube. More like this or another show digging deeper into Chrissy and her contemporaries, context for her music. Yes, I would listen to another! :)

Best Music Pod on The Planet
Love this show. Great chemistry with the hosts and they always present a fantastically well-researched episode. One of my essential pods!

Best deep dive I’ve ever heard.
I am not at all surprised that thousands of people are digging on this groove. Both of the hosts’ energies are infectious, the editing and mixing is gold standard, the level of research is insane. All of it is so so good. I can’t stop thinking about that Kate Bush episode. The 2 part Genesis show is incredible.

    So ‘Well’ done
This has become my favorite podcast. Zero hemming and hawing , the blending of actual interviews and music is beyond anything I’ve yet heard . Bravo , Bravo , Bravo!!

    Genesis!
Big fan of this podcast - and especially the latest episode. As somebody who was a rabid Genesis fan for my middle school years (first concert - Invisible Touch Tour at Veterans Stadium) and then moved on, just want to say how much I'm enjoying the latest pod. It's amazing going back to the songs I loved with fresh adult ears as well as developing more of an appreciation for the stuff that seemed more obscure and inaccessible at the time - like everything before Duke! Love the info and commentary too, keep it up and thanks!

    RE: Genesis, Pt. 1
Dude… Oh. My. Gosh. I’ve listened to all the episodes and this is the best one ever. In fact, this may end up being one of my top podcast episodes of all time. It’s so deep… And so rich. I came into Genesis with Abacab. I remember my mind being blown when I found out that the front man used to be Gabriel. I stayed with Phil going forward but never went back to the beginning. I will rectify that going forward, I promise. And then the outro! OH MAN. I had never heard that!! It left me truly stunned. I had to listen to it a few more times. I’m still emotional about it. Amazing. Amazing. Sigh. Great job.

    Thanks for Talking Tunes!
The show has really hit the spot since I discovered it about a year ago. Usually listen at night while doing dishes and laundry. I certainly match up with you both on music taste - first one I listened to was the Little Feat episode- but I’ve learned a bunch and been turned on to a ton of great music. You both bring a fun, and genuine vibe which I really appreciate. I’m still working my way through the episodes - Allen Toussaint episode is a can’t miss, just listened to the hated albums episode which was really fun, and I’m stoked for the Genesis episodes. Keep going - if you guys make ‘em I’ll listen.

I love this show! The hosts are so nice and unpretentious and I learn so much from every episode. Keep em coming boys

Music Heads Just Wanna Have Fun
Is there a better music head duo out there than Lex and Dave? These guys not only know their stuff about music, they remind me what is so fun about discovering and exploring new and old sounds from a wide range of artists. Zero pretensions and tons of laughs as they take deep dives on bands to get to the really good stuff on the edges of the music. I learned so much from the one on Marvin Gaye. The most recent Hated Albums episode was also great. You can’t go wrong listening to The Well of Sound but if you do, Lex’s radio voice will smooth things over and Dave’s yowzas will get you back on track.

the best rock n soul autopsy in existence
i can't imagine a a more panoramic or enjoyable music podcast. at least that's what it started out as. now's more like a series of top-drawer audio documentaries. Lex and Dave do their homework but are also funny and spontaneous and the production is fantastic - and clearly really enjoy one another. i listen to a lot of rock n roll podcasts but the Well of Sound stands alone. Cannot wait for more episodes. highly recommend the playlists on spotify too.

    Who are these guys?
I find it really refreshing to hear succinct, well researched, and generally optimistic critiques and information delivered in a casual and fun way. These guys know how to do that. So many bands that I grew up with but knew a little about are revealed in a new and exciting way. I’m tired of critics that show off how snarky they are, versus these guys who tell us why they love something and what moved them. Love that. Now I want to hear all about Gram Parsons!

    Very Entertaining
I stumbled upon this show while searching for Cheap Trick podcasts. These guys did a great episode on my favorite band, but I didn’t stop there. Because they are such great speakers, who have obviously done their research on every act they tackle, I went “All In” and listened to every episode available. Because of this podcast, I now know the greatest of Swamp Dogg and Fanny. Amazing stuff. I can’t wait for the next show...

    Great podcast
This comes from listening to their episode on Thin Lizzy. I enjoyed the production on this show and there discussions. They covered the history of Philip Lynott and Thin Lizzy very well. It has helped me to remind myself of the music podcast I want to create as my first audio documentaries will be on Thin Lizzy. You gentlemen have a great show and I look forward to discovering more music from your show. I will make sure to send people your way to listen. I wish you guys well on your show. Thank you.

    So good
I came to this podcast through Dave’s work with Mockingbird, which I love. Turns out I love this too. The Paul Williams episode was a revelation.

    Super funny & informative
The best music podcast going. Huge range of artists, always interesting. Def a must subscribe

    Eye Opening
Some of the artists they cover are favorites before Dave and Lex start, but by the end of each episode, I am hooked on even the most obscure band. Pure joy to listen to these guys.

    Become a better listener.
There's a lot to enjoy on this podcast. Sure, I don't know half the names these two drop, but it doesn't matter, because their adorkable joy in playing music for each other is what keeps me tuning in. They give me new ears for well-worn hits and take me deep into the bootleggers' lair. I'm a better music listener after listening to them. And maybe I'm even a better person.

    Pure Joy
Dave and Lex thoroughly enjoy the music and the people behind the music. Playfulness runs through it all! There’s a bedrock of love for the artists that colors every cast. No mockery while not allowing the musicians to be taken too seriously. You don’t have to adore every band to be brought into their deep appreciation of the songwriters. Love it!
  • A Milford Man
Deep dives into the weird and wonderful.
I’m still a little mad that the intro to the Christmas special took me out of the #LDB challenge, but I will get over it. If you ever really need to corner someone at a cocktail party with info about The Beach Boys, this is your show. Hands down.

    Roxy--It Blew My Mind
The Roxy Music episode gets my vote for podcast of the year in the "things you might like if you like things that are awesome" category. It gets deep the way the Well of Sound does. So good. ...where my Studebaker takes me.

Passion, Canny Analysis, & Pure Delight
Love this podcast! These guys are PASSIONATE about music. Sounds like I’m about 15 years younger than the hosts (maybe?) so most of the stuff they cover is from slightly before my time. But that being said, this is timeless stuff they’re dealing with; I love being guided into through the history and work of these seminal bands and artists. And Dave and Lex are trustworthy guides, they know their stuff. A fantastic way to learn about the music that influenced the artists I’ve grown up listening to. Keep up the good work!!

Do YOU Live Under a Rock?
I have more or less dedicated my life to playing the clarinet and studying classical music, and have to catch up on popular music (I'm pretty Beatles literate, though, yeah, yeah, yeah). This is the perfect podcast for real music lovers. Funny & smart. Never boring.
  • gloveu2
    Knowledgeable, Humorous, Enthusiastic, and Fantastic!
The most rewarding part of this podcast is the deep dives into artists you think you know. You will know them after Dave and Lex get done talking! Better yet, they will get you to like artists you may not. Count me a new Seeger and Roxy Music fan. John (gloveman 2).

    All the feels
I laughed, I cried. It was better than CATS! Excellent podcast-deep, deep dive into music history, by true fans!

    Well worth the listen
I thought I knew a lot about music. You guys are on a whole other level. Definitely adding this show to the rotation. Well done, Jacobb

I only listen to the Well of Sound
Have you heard The Well of Sound? If you’ve ever wondered about the history of Little Feat or whatever happened to Mott the Hoople, or if you have any interest in the most captivating commentary on the popular music of the last 50 years, you must check out this amazing podcast hosted by David Zahl and the inimitable Lex. How does anyone know so much about Glen Campbell or know how to spin the tale of Cheap Trick into a compelling narrative? I only listen to The Well of Sound and You should too.

I love Rock n Roll... and this podcast
There is so much here. No time wasted on long intros. They just get into the music. Each episode is like a "Behind the Music" if hosted by Jack Black from Hi Fidelity--though without an edge. Just two guys who love music. There's a humility--love it when they find out one knows a song that the other doesn't. They are simultaneously sharing their love for music while discovering new music. I have learned so much from listening--and I've loved every minute. Lots of laughs, pathos, connection, and fun. Listen up!

    Something if everyone
And the chemistry between these two music nerds is pitch perfect. Worth the listen!

    Love it
If you are a music nut and love deep dives into musical history then give this podcast a whirl! The conversations are fun and witty that make you wish you were there. As always “if you get confused just listen to the music play!”
  • Mattmagill
    Wonderful
There’s not a person alive I’d rather talk music with than David Zahl! Whoever this other guy he has with him ought to be trusted as well! These guys are the best. Give them a listen!
